To my dear daughter,
Before you were even a glimmer in my eye, everyone told me that I would love you more than anything. Everyone told me that the love I felt would be rich, overwhelming and amazing. I heard it again and again…and from the second I saw that plus sign on the test, I knew it was true. I would never love anyone the way that I love you.
I watched the miracle of you through little black and white sonogram pictures. I waited for the day that I would hold you. I heard your first cry, your first laugh and felt your arms squeeze my neck. There was no way of knowing how much I could love someone until you came into my life.
We’ve been through highs and lows in the past few years, from sleepless nights and temper tantrums to days when I didn’t recognize myself. I’ve had moments when I doubt that I am good enough for you, but even in those moments, my deep love is always there.
Where: You change and grow every single day. You learn new words and show off new talents at a lightning fast pace. All of these moments make my heart swell. You have changed me in ways that you’ll never know.,
You’ve forced me to dig deep to find parts of myself that I didn’t know were there. You’ve taught me to be more patient and to abandon many of my inhibitions. I only run through sprinklers and make snow angels because of you.
No sound to me is sweeter than your voice; through your eyes, I see the world anew. I don’t mind the sunrise when it’s you who wakes me at dawn. You’ve helped me to see how much beauty there is in something as simple as a fallen leaf. You’ve taught me to be gentle with myself and you’ve taught me to try again.
You astound me with your precocious ideas and your made-up silly songs. When you ask me, “Mommy, do you know that I love you?” Yes, I do know sweetheart and I love you too.
Love always,
Mom
